Since 2018, the OeGDV Clinician Scientist Research Fellowship in dermatovenereology has been open for applications. The goal of this fellowship is to promote the careers of clinician-scientists with a clear scientific interest and to provide them with protected time to carry out research projects.

APPLICANT INSTRUCTIONS

The OeGDV intends to promote research careers of young clinician-scientists. Eligible applicants are:

• MD or MD/PhD degree obtained no more than 10 years prior to application (excluding time taken for childcare)
• Signed statement outlining the applicant´s career goal in research in dermatovenereology
• Strong support for career development from the leadership of an Austrian department of dermatology (signed statement required)
• At least 1 year of residency training in dermatology and venereology, preferably at an Austrian department of dermatology
• Active member of the OeGDV, applicants may hold positions up to the level of Assistant Professor (Associate Professors and department/division chairs are not eligible)
• Strong institutional commitment with written confirmation for protected research time
• Any additional financial project support including industry sponsorship must be listed in the budget plan of the proposal.
• Proposals addressing pathogenesis, epidemiology, new therapeutic approaches, and outcomes research are particularly encouraged.

SELECTION PROCESS

Decisions are made by the Scientific Committee ("Wissenschaftlicher Ausschuss") of the ÖGDV based on a peer-review process involving at least two international reviewers.

PROJECT START, BUDGETING AND CO-FINANCING

• The project must start within 12 months after the Clinician Scientist grant has been awarded.
• Approvals from the relevant human ethics committee and/or animal ethics committee, as well as statement from the department chair confirming protected research time, are prerequisites for the transfer of funds.
• The funds can either be used for one full year of research or two years of protected research time at 50%. Co-financing (e.g. reagents, 50% clinical work) must be guaranteed by the department.
• Applicants must describe how additional costs beyond this award will be funded.
• National and international collaborations are encouraged. Travel costs must be covered by the department and are not included in this award.
• At the start of the project, 50% of the funds will be transferred to a research account of the institution. The funds are exclusively awarded for the applicant and cannot be used for other purposes. No indirect cost can be financed. Transfer of funds to other institutions is not permitted.
• Applicant must notify the ÖGDV of any co-funding of the same project from other sources. If the project is entirely funded by other sources, ÖGDV may retract its decision and request a reimbursement of the fund.
• In the event of a change of institution, the OeGDV requires the submission of a revised application for approval.

REPORTING

• Flexible use of funds with respect to personnel versus reagent costs, but this must be explained. Any funds not used within the maximum funding period must be returned to the ÖGDV.
• Within 5 months of project start, a research report must be submitted before the second half of the funding will be transferred.
• After completion of the project, a final financial report from the institution’s project account must be submitted.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Publications must contain an acknowledgement: “This research was supported in part by a clinician scientist grant of the Austrian Society of Dermatology and Venereology”.
